Overview of Maths

At Mountnessing, our mathematics curriculum is underpinned by our Christian vision and commitment to inclusion, ensuring all pupils, regardless of background or need, are enabled to participate fully and thrive. We aim to foster a love of mathematics by providing an engaging and ambitious curriculum that promotes curiosity, confidence and enjoyment.

We believe that everyone can do maths. Through high expectations and inclusive practice, all pupils are supported to achieve success and develop secure, deep conceptual understanding. Our approach to teaching for mastery ensures pupils develop depth of understanding over time, rather than moving on before concepts are secure. Learning is carefully sequenced in small, manageable steps, enabling pupils to build knowledge progressively and make meaningful connections.

Our curriculum places number at its heart, recognising its importance in enabling pupils to access all areas of mathematics. Pupils are given regular opportunities to revisit and consolidate prior learning, supporting retention and fluency over time.

We promote the development of fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, equipping pupils with the skills and knowledge needed to make connections, think critically and apply mathematics in a range of contexts, including real-life situations. Pupils use stem sentences to help them explain their thinking using precise mathematical language and to approach challenges with resilience and perseverance.

Across the school, pupils are guided to use manipulatives and representations within their learning to support visualisation and reveal the underlying mathematical structures. Teaching follows a concrete, pictorial and abstract (CPA) approach, enabling pupils to build secure, connected understanding and move confidently towards abstract thinking.

In line with our whole-school approach, we provide a broad, balanced and appropriately challenging curriculum that meets the needs of all learners. Through rich tasks and meaningful applications, pupils are supported to become masters, think creatively and develop a lifelong appreciation of mathematics.

Curriculum Organisation

Our mathematics curriculum is carefully structured and coherently sequenced from EYFS to Key Stage 2, enabling clear progression and the development of secure, long-term understanding. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning, which teachers adapt to meet the needs of our pupils, whilst maintaining a focus on depth before breadth.

Pupils progress together through the curriculum, supported by high-quality teaching, collaborative learning opportunities and timely intervention where needed. Mathematics is taught daily, alongside regular opportunities to revisit and practise key knowledge and skills, including number facts and calculation strategies. This consistent approach ensures pupils develop fluency, confidence and independence as mathematicians.
