British Values
Promoting Fundamental British Values
In accordance with The Department for Education we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
Promoting British values in our school is about helping children understand and live by the principles that underpin society in the UK, while embedding these into everyday school life in a way that is age-appropriate and engaging.
Some ideas about how we do this are listed below:
1. Democracy
Encourage pupils to have a voice in school decisions through school councils or class votes.
Teach about making choices and understanding the importance of everyone’s opinion.
Discuss fairness and respecting rules.
2. Rule of Law
Help children understand why rules exist in school and society.
Link classroom rules and playground agreements to wider laws.
Discuss consequences for actions in a clear, age-appropriate way.
3. Individual Liberty
Support children to make choices about their learning and interests.
Encourage children to express opinions respectfully.
Promote opportunities for pupils to develop talents and explore new activities.
4. Mutual Respect
Foster an environment of politeness, kindness and tolerance.
Model respectful language and behaviour in all interactions.
Celebrate achievements of all children to show that everyone’s contribution is valued.
5. Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs
Teach about a variety of religions and cultures in RE and cross-curricular lessons.
Celebrate cultural events and festivals from different traditions.
Encourage children to understand and respect differences in beliefs and backgrounds.
Ways we Embed British Values Across the School:
Assemblies and Worship that explore themes such as fairness, respect and responsibility.
PSHE lessons that cover empathy, rights and responsibilities.
Classroom discussions on news, stories or events that illustrate these values.
Collaborative projects that encourage teamwork and appreciation of diversity.
