Social justice and Responsibility

Social justice and responsibility is a powerful vehicle for developing positive relationships within our community and is deeply embedded within our theologically rooted Christian vision.

We seek to empower children to become agents of change in their communities by recognising that each individual is uniquely capable of possessing a loving heart, pursuing wisdom and flourishing physically, academically, morally, culturally, emotionally and spiritually.

In our school we encourage children to become 'agents of change' and we have linked up with the local 'Forget Me Not' Club in the village. This is a dementia-friendly respite offer that meets 3 times a week. We visit this group every other week and the children support the members by playing games, being creative and talking to them. We also invite them into school and have held afternoon teas and Christmas singing for them too.

These visits help build meaningful connections across generations and give our pupils a valuable understanding of empathy, kindness, and community. We are proud of the thoughtful and caring way the children represent our school.

We also encourage the children to think about others at Advent and at Lent. During this time we collect food and resources for our local foodbank. The school council deliver the food as speak to those in charge to find out about how their donations will make a difference.

We strive to look beyond the confines of our school community, and this can involve tackling local issues, national issues and even pressing global issues such as climate change or plastic pollution. Each week the children tak part in Picture News where they learn and understand a current local, national or global issue. We encourage them to use a 'door moment' and look to ways in which they can make a difference.

We have a School Council and an Eco Council who both play an active and important role in our school community. Recently, our Eco Council led a whole-school initiative calling for positive change for wildlife. They felt passionately about the issue and spoke proudly in worship about the simple actions we can all take to support local wildlife, as well as animals living further afield. Their leadership and enthusiasm inspired the whole school to get involved and pledge to make a difference.

Above all, courageous advocacy is a genuine heartfelt call to action to make a positive impact on peoples' lives whilst recognising and balancing our freedoms and rights with our responsibilities as stewards of our planet. Through our curriculum we identify opportunities where we can encourage the children to make a call to action and develop their understanding of social justice. Knowing that they may be small but they are mighty!
